Jonathan Banner and Pierre Falcon escort Peter Swayze, a member of the Hudson Bay Company's Board of Directors, back to the fort. While he is eventually meant to replace the current factor of the company, Swayze is ignorant and childish. During a trade with the Ojibwe tribe, the factor negotiates a leadership dispute between Chief Orobayish and his son Quayquay. Swayze accidentally insults Quayquay, leading to a fight and the eventual capture and torture of Swayze. Banner tricks the tribe into releasing Swayze by threatening to release disease upon the Ojibwe, and Swayze learns an important lesson in humility and tolerance.
